el centro

 

 

The series El Centro takes its name from a town in the Mojave Desert, California. The plants that form the series’ subjects were encountered in the deserts, woodlands and backyards of North America. Beautiful and toxic, sensual and spine incrusted, carnivorous and flamboyant, these diverse incarnations of plant life reveal a flora both unexpected and strange. A central image, the large tornado Manitou, anchors the composition. Like a magnet, it draws and holds the plants to center, or perhaps flings them outward and away. An offering of seeds and dried plants is placed below.
